Combine the traditional skills of Chinese tying knots and bamboo crafts with the modern simplicity design to design Comchair. This chair provides users to have a new way to experience the meaning of old-fashion furniture into a new lifestyle.
Design Comchair to be the most simple furniture to reflect the modern simplicity design. This furniture echoes the idea of energy-saving and no wasting.
Design Process
The idea of Comchair is to use only 1 bamboo to produce the whole structure of this chair. Therefore, we had faced more crafts challenges while designing this chair. For example, the limitation of bamboo bending curves, maximum of 8 pieces for the chair's frame we could have from 1 bamboo, and the supporting test from this material.
When people sit on Comchair, the downward body pressure will make the chair frames have outward tension. Therefore, use the traditional Chinese knots to tight the frames as the counterforce for this chair and further supporting the sitter's body.
Research
Traditional Chinese craftsmen used to use bamboo as the material for designing furniture because this material is easy to get and has long-lasting usability, also only need 2~7 years to grow, which are the fastest-growing plants in the world. However, these skills are rapidly disappearing during industrialization. Comchair starts with the goal of reducing waste during furniture production and redefine traditional bamboo furniture into the modern style.
It is the loop process of constructing and reconstructing. Back and forth testing could review the idea and the possibility. Also, it helps to reduce the wasting while the chair sending to the production.
